The Hashish Cookbook is the first cookbook of marijuana edibles published by beat poet Ira Cohen. A peak 1960s document, it is now collected in the archives of the Beineke Library at Yale University and the Houghton Library at Harvard University. Bringing together marijuana and hashish recipes from Morocco, North Africa, India, and the Himalayas, this wildly influential text exists at a unique nexus of performance art, avant garde film, and countercultural lifestyles. In this class we will explore the text’s origin, contested authorship, and enduring influence.
